Celebrating Bob's 50th anniversary as a broadcaster
Bob celebrates 50 years on-air in a special programme looking back at his half century as a broadcaster, packed full with favourite songs and live music from Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Described by Radio Times as ‘one of the greats of British contemporary music broadcasting and an independent champion of great music’, Bob first took to the airwaves on August 19th 1970, when he presented his first programme for Radio 1, and in the fifty years since then he's become one of Britain's favourite broadcasters, a real national treasure.
Awarded the OBE in 2011 for services to music broadcasting few people have broken as many bands into the mainstream consciousness as Bob Harris…through his work on Radio 1, the legendary Whistle Test TV shows and his current programmes on Radio 2. He is passionate about music and his infectious enthusiasm permeates his work. Bob’s guiding principle is the pursuit of excellence, and this is reflected in his broadcasting skills and his devotion to the best music.
He co-founded Time Out magazine, has written books, newspaper articles and magazine columns. He has produced records, done 48-gig rock tours and interviewed a President. He has voiced television and radio documentaries, and appeared in films, most recently in the award winning "Wild Rose". He has been given a Fellowship by the University of Northampton and was the penultimate subject of This Is Your Life.
Bob’s depth of understanding of popular music – its origins and influences – is immense. As a voice on the radio – reassuring, knowledgeable and enthusiastic – he is unique.

Sue Lawley's castaway this week is the playwright and film director Anthony Minghella. He grew up on the Isle of Wight in a close-knit family of Italian descent, and says that he has never felt truly English. It is not surprising therefore that his most successful film explores questions of identity and nationality. That film, The English Patient, won nine Oscars. It is, he admits, unashamedly moving, since for him the purpose of fiction is to "exercise the emotional muscle". Music, too, plays an important part in his life. He listens to music as he writes and the structure of many of his plays and film scripts are influenced by it.
