Peter Doig is one of Britain’s most successful living artists. His paintings have been exhibited at major galleries around the world, winning wide critical acclaim and selling for tens of millions of pounds at auction, setting sales records.

Peter was born in Edinburgh in 1959, but grew up in Trinidad and Canada, where his father had chosen to work. Peter was partly educated at a Scottish boarding school, but didn't enjoy the experience. He returned to Canada, dropped out of education, and at the age of 17 found work on a gas rig in the rural west. He decided to move to London, largely attracted by the post-punk music scene, and from 1979 until the late 1980s, he trained as a painter at art schools in the capital, as well as spending time back in Canada.

While his contemporaries among young British artists in the 1990s often created large-scale installations, sculptures or videos, Peter dedicated himself to painting, often working with very large canvases, creating atmospheric, mysterious landscapes acclaimed for their use of colour.

In 2002, echoing his own childhood, he and his family moved to Trinidad, where he set up his studio. The island became his main home for almost two decades, before he moved to London in 2021.

Isabella Tree is an author and travel writer. Her award-winning book Wilding: the Return of Nature to a British Farm, describes how she and her conservationist husband Charlie decided after many generations of intensive dairy and arable farming to undertake a pioneering experiment. They would rewild their 3,500 acre estate, Knepp in West Sussex – returning it to nature.

Using herds of free-roaming animals to create new habitats, their rewilded land is now – more than 20 years later - a haven for wildlife and rare species like turtle-doves, nightingales and purple emperor butterflies. The estate has become central to the debate about how we look after and regenerate the land.

Isabella is also a travel journalist and has written books about her journeys to Nepal, Mexico and Papua New Guinea. Her music choices include works by Schubert, Handel, Bach but also compositions made in response to the Knepp estate.

Celebrating female singer-songwriters with Nashville journalist and writer, Marissa R. Moss, who has just published a ground-breaking book called 'Her Country – How the Women of Country Music Became the Success They Were Never Supposed to Be'. This programme featuring the trailblazing artists who have triumphed over inequalities and discrimination including Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris, Carrie Underwood, Rissi Palmer and Brandy Clark.

While most of these names will be familiar to the Another Country audience, it's a different story overseas. In 2021 female artists on American Country Radio counted for as little as 10 per cent of their entire playlists. Ricky also feature some of the African-American and LGBTQ+ artists that have reached audiences and enjoyed success despite the lack of support in their home country.

You'll also hear music from the female stars of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s who paved the way for the younger generation of music makers including Loretta Lynn, Kitty Wells, The Chicks, LeAnn Rimes and Tanya Tucker.

Scotland's festival season is in full swing with TRNSMT, Tiree Music Festival and Stonehaven Folk Festival all kicking off this weekend and many more still to come. To get you in the mood Anna has music from some of the festival highlights coming up over summer.

Plus you have another chance to hear the mighty Mary Wallopers in session on Travelling Folk ahead of their set on the King Tut's stage at TRNSMT this weekend. Praised for bringing excitement back to traditional ballad singing, the seven piece band were formed by brothers Charles and Andrew Hendy and their friend Sean McKenna travelling the length and breadth of Ireland singing and collecting songs. Their early live performances exuded a raw energy with their self-titled first album perfectly capturing their sound and ethos, one filled with warmth, intimacy, chaos and enough sparks ready to light any fire.
