Professor Peter Hennessy is one of the UK’s leading contemporary historians. He has written acclaimed and important books about politics, the civil service, the intelligence agencies and the British constitution on which he is an expert.

Peter was born in London in 1947 and read history at St John’s College, Cambridge. He started writing for the Times in the mid-1970s, covering the inner workings of Whitehall whose activities at that time were shrouded in secrecy. Peter says he approached his journalism like an amateur anthropologist trying to discover more about an unknown culture. His reports were viewed with suspicion by some members of the civil service and Harold Wilson, the then prime minister, issued an edit banning them from talking to him.

In 1986 Peter co-founded the Institute of Contemporary British History, and in 1992 he moved from journalism to academia at Queen Mary, University of London where he is Attlee professor of contemporary British history. He is a fellow of the British Academy and was made a crossbench life peer in 2010. During the COVID-19 pandemic he started keeping a diary which he describes as an “aid to humility” with the aim of assessing post-world war history as BC (Before Covid) or AC (After Covid).

Peter lives in London with his wife Enid.

Musician and writer Ben Watt released his first single when he was just 19. In 1981, on his first day as a student at Hull University, he met Tracey Thorn, and together they formed the duo Everything But the Girl – taking their name from the slogan of a local furniture shop. Over the next twenty years, they had 12 top 40 singles and 7 top 20 albums. Since then Ben has experimented in dance and electronic music, run his own record label and returned to songwriting with the release of two solo albums.

Ben has also written two acclaimed books. The first about his experience of a life-threatening autoimmune disease and the second, a poignant portrait of his parents. Most recently, he’s returned to making music with his wife Tracey Thorn in a new Everything But the Girl Album.

Teenage friends Sean Cooney, Michael Hughes and David Eagle literally stumbled over folk music in 2003 in the back room of The Sun Inn in their native Stockton-on-Tees, never knowing that such music existed. They became regulars and, as the youngest people in the room, were dubbed The Young’uns – a name that, for better or worse, has stuck. Fast forward 20 years and the triple BBC award winners are revered for their strong songs, spellbinding harmonies and rapid fire humour. Songwriter Sean Cooney joins Anna live to talk about their latest album, Tiny Notes.

Sarah-Jane Summers is one of Scotland's foremost fiddlers & a tradition bearer of the old Highland style. Juhani Silvola is a sought-after guitarist, renowned composer of electro-acoustic contemporary music, and record producer. Together, they are an internationally acclaimed Scottish/Finnish duo, who celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2021. For their latest project, Sølvstrøk (Silverstroke), they have specially created an all-star Norwegian chamber orchestra. Sarah-Jane and Juhani join Anna live from Norway.
