The Australian actor Rebel Wilson became an international star with a breakthrough part in the 2011 Hollywood comedy Bridesmaids, opposite Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. She followed this up playing Fat Amy in the highly successful Pitch Perfect trilogy, which documents the fortunes of a female college acapella group.

Rebel was born in Balmain, a suburb of Sydney. Her parents bred and showed dogs, in particular beagles, and her first brush with showbusiness came when she visited television studios to watch the dogs perform in popular shows. The dogs were so successful they even had their own agents.

She studied for a combined arts and law degree and then joined the Australian Theatre for Young People. At the age of 29 she sold everything she had and left Sydney to try her luck in Hollywood where she slept on a friend’s sofa for the first few months. She gave herself a year to make it and Bridesmaids came at just the right time – she never looked back.

Rebel recently made her debut as a director with the Deb, a musical set in Australia.

Dorothy Byrne has worked in journalism for more than 40 years, including almost 20 years as Head of News and Current Affairs at Channel 4 from 2003 to 2020. She talks to Michael Berkeley about the sexism and harassment she experienced as a young producer, which she detailed in her MacTaggart Lecture at the Edinburgh Television Festival in 2019, in which she added that she would still recommend journalism to young women today - ‘in what other line of work, when... you hear of some absolute disgrace, can you say to yourself “I’m going to make a programme exposing that and I’ll put a stop to it!” And sometimes you even do.’ She has also argued that challenging journalism which calls politicians to account is a vital part of any healthy democracy.

Since 2021 she has been President of Murray Edwards College, a women-only college at the University of Cambridge. Her music choices include pieces by Mozart, Handel, Amy Beach and Nina Simone, as well as a recording of her college choir performing music by Hildegard of Bingen.

Sealladh, the new album from singer, harpist and composer Rachel Newton, began as a commission for the National Galleries of Scotland, celebrating over eighty years of live music programming at the Gallery. The commission also coincided with the opening of the new Scottish Galleries, home to the vast collection of artworks by Scottish painters, a selection of which both inspired and are in conversation with Newton’s music. Each track on the album is based on a particular painting and draws on the mythology, language, history, culture and landscapes that originally set the scene for these artworks. Rachel joins Anna live on the eve of the album release.

Plus we celebrate some of Scotland's up and coming talent with a session from students of The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Traditional Music course - one of few Bachelor of Music degrees dedicated to traditional and folk music. The students share the music they've been working on ahead of their Recital Festival - the culmination of years of study by these emerging professionals.
