Sandy Powell won her first Academy Award for dressing Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love, and has since won two more Oscars - along with a further dozen nominations - and three BAFTAs. Her credits range from Gangs of New York for Martin Scorsese to Mary Poppins Returns for Disney, and she's worked with many of the biggest current screen stars, including Leonardo di Caprio, Cate Blanchett and Al Pacino.
Sandy was born in south London and completed an art foundation course at St Martin’s School of Art. In 1981 she got her first job designing costumes for the choreographer Lindsay Kemp’s show Nijinsky at La Scala in Milan. She later worked for the director Derek Jarman on his film Caravaggio and continued to collaborate with him until his death in 1994. She has also enjoyed long working relationships with Martin Scorsese and Todd Haynes.
Sandy has won acclaim for her designs on films with historical settings, including The Wings of the Dove, The Young Victoria and The Favourite starring Olivia Colman, as well as the flamboyant glam rock world of Velvet Goldmine and the fairy-tale fantasy of Cinderella, starring Lily James.
In 2011 she was awarded an OBE for services for the film industry and in 2023 she became the first costume designer to receive a BAFTA Fellowship.

Michael Winterbottom is one of Britain’s most prolific and eclectic film directors: his work encompasses political thrillers and pop culture, reworkings of classic novels and retelling real events.
He’s made three films based on the novels of Thomas Hardy, including a version of Jude the Obscure with Christopher Eccleston and Kate Winslet.
He’s worked extensively with Steve Coogan, starting in 2001 with 24 Hour Party People, in which Coogan played the Manchester music impresario Tony Wilson. More recently they’ve made four series of the BAFTA award-winning series The Trip, in which Coogan and Rob Brydon tour restaurants in England, Italy, Spain and Greece.
Many of his films react to real-world events, including Welcome to Sarajevo and The Road to Guantánamo. In 2022 he co-wrote and co-directed This England, a TV series about Boris Johnson’s leadership during the Covid crisis, with Kenneth Branagh playing the former Prime Minister.
Michael’s most recent film, Shoshana, is a political thriller set in the 1930s in what was then British Mandatory Palestine.

The qualities we look for in a good leader and the dire consequences of getting landed with a bad one are the focus of this week's episode. In Shakespeare’s Henry V, the king goes around the camp on the eve of Agincourt, quelling the fears of his army, while Aeneas brings hope to his despairing followers in Virgil’s Aeneid. Emmeline Pankhurst incites a suffragist meeting to rebellion and Elizabeth I gives a similarly rousing speech to her troops. On a more personal scale, Grace Nichols recalls the dedicated leadership of her father in his role as headmaster. There are disappointed leaders too – Napoleon and Toussaint Louverture – and a tyrannical pig in Orwell’s Animal Farm. Music includes Dominic Argento’s setting of the final diary entry of the leader of a disastrous polar expedition, dedicated activist Paul Robeson singing the spiritual Go Down Moses and John Adams’s operatic evocation of President Nixon’s historic trip to meet Chairman Mao, plus brilliant drummer and notoriously exacting bandleader Buddy Rich in full flow. Carlene Carter celebrates the legacy of her family and discusses her own successful solo career.
The Carter Family were the first major recording stars of country after being part of the 1927 Bristol Sessions, considered to be the "Big Bang" of country music. Carlene's grandmother, Maybelle was present at these historic recordings as well as her great aunt and uncle.
In this special programme and extended conversation, Carlene explores the songbook of her mother June Carter who later married Johnny Cash. She also talks about her father, Carl Smith who was one of country music's most successful male artists with 30 top 10 hit singles during the 1950s.
Carlene's own career includes recording ten solo albums, song-writing for Emmylou Harris, acting and being part of the second generation revival of the Carter Family.

In the run up to Saint Patrick's Day, Anna shares unheard bonus material from some of the amazing people featured on Travelling Folk's Donegal special. This week, Capercaillie's Manus Lunny and Altan's Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh talk about the remarkable success of musicians from this remote nook of the north west of Ireland.
Dr Frances Wilkins, a Senior Lecturer in Ethnomusicology at the University of Aberdeen, has spent the last six years undertaking fieldwork in the West Highlands and Western Isles and exploring sacred and spiritual singing from the region. Her research comes to life in a new interactive exhibition, Seinn Spioradail: Sacred Soundscapes of the Highlands and Islands, which she has co-curated with designer Ronan Martin. The exhibition launched in Stornoway and will tour Hebridean communities in 2024 and 2025. Dr Frances Wilkins and Gaelic singer Torquil MacLeod join Anna live to explore how sacred singing was, and continues to be, integral to many aspects of community life.
