Dr Nicky Fox is only the second woman to hold the post of Head of Science at NASA since the agency was founded in 1958. She has responsibility for around a hundred missions which are investigating the mysteries of outer space. These missions are tackling questions such as how do hurricanes form and are we alone in the universe.

Nicky was born in Hitchin in Hertfordshire and her father introduced her to the wonders of space when she was just a few months old. In 1969 he lifted her out of her cot to watch the television coverage of the Apollo 11 mission when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. Nicky’s enduring fascination with the cosmos led her to study physics at Imperial College in London.

After completing her PhD she took up a post-doctoral fellowship at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland. In 2010 she became the project scientist for the Parker Solar Probe, humanity’s first mission to a star, which launched in 2018 and is still flying through the sun’s atmosphere collecting data. Recently she oversaw the Osiris-Rex mission which brought back the first asteroid samples from deep space.

In 2021 Nicky was awarded the American Astronautical Society’s Carl Sagan Memorial Award for her leadership in the field of Heliophysics.

Kevin O’Hare is the director of the Royal Ballet and he probably finds it hard to remember a time when dance wasn’t part of his life. He started young, and joined the Royal Ballet School at the age of eleven. He went on to dance with Sadler’s Wells and Birmingham Royal Ballet, taking on roles such as Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake, Albrecht in Giselle and Romeo in Kenneth MacMillan's Romeo and Juliet.

He retired from the stage in 2000, at the age of 35, but before long he was back in the world of dance – this time behind the scenes. By 2009, he was Administrative Director of the Royal Ballet and oversaw their first tour to Cuba. Three years later he became overall director. He has since worked with a wide range of dancers, choreographers and composers, and helped steer the company through the Covid crisis.

Kevin's choices include music by Tchaikovsky, Thomas Ades, Rachmaninov and Anna Clyne.

Ashley Campbell and Thor Jensen are in conversation. They perform tracks from their debut album Turtle Cottage, cover a country classic and share some of their favourite songs.

While Campbell Jensen is a new project, its two members have a storied history spanning Americana, country, bluegrass, gypsy jazz and rock. Ashley Campbell first came to attention as a member of her late father Glen Campbell’s band before starting a solo career, while Thor Jensen was a member of Quiet Life and toured with different acts. They met when Ashley wanted to learn how to play the gypsy jazz of Django Reinhardt that her dad had adored when she was a child, the tutor she found being Thor, who had only moved to Nashville the week before.

The 21st MG ALBA Scots Trad Music Awards are just around the corner with over 110 artists and organisations in the running across 22 categories, showcasing the abundance of talent in Scotland’s traditional music scene. With the genre experiencing an impressive resurgence, reaching wider audiences with new festivals and events popping up year after year, the awards – organised by Scotland’s traditional culture, music and arts organisation Hands Up For Trad – stand as a testament to the trad scene’s enduring appeal.

The annual glittering award ceremony will be held on Saturday 2nd December this year at Caird Hall in Dundee and Hands Up For Trad's Creative Director, Simon Thoumire, joins Anna live with a preview of what's to come, plus, music from all ten albums nominated for the coveted Album of the Year award.
