Adam Kay is a writer whose memoir This is Going to Hurt; Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor won the Book of the Year prize at the National Book Awards and has sold over three million copies. It was adapted for television as a BBC series that won four BAFTAs this year, including Adam’s award for best drama writer.

Adam was born in Brighton in 1980 and studied medicine at Imperial College London. In 2004 he started working as a junior doctor, specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology. In 2010 he left medicine following a catastrophic incident in surgery.

He had kept a diary throughout his medical career, partly to help cope with the long shifts and stressful environment that came with life as a hospital doctor. In 2016 Adam read from his diaries for a show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the positive reception he received from audiences encouraged him to use them as the basis for a memoir. The book became a publishing sensation, and Adam has published further books and enjoyed considerable success with his live performances.

Adam lives in Oxfordshire with his husband James.

Naomi Alderman is a writer who likes to question established ways of thinking. In 2017 her novel The Power won the Bailey’s Women’s Prize for fiction. It imagines a world where women develop the ability to emit electric shocks from their fingers, leading to a worldwide reversal in the traditional balance of power between the sexes. The book became a global bestseller, and more recently a nine-part TV drama.

A sense of rebellion was evident in the title of her first novel, Disobedience: its tale of a woman who questions the conventions of the strict Orthodox Jewish community in which she grew up, and draws in part on Naomi’s own experiences.

Along with four novels, Naomi has created and written computer games, including Zombies, Run! This immersive app encourages you to improve your fitness – by running faster to escape predatory zombies.

Naomi's musical choices include Mozart, Respighi, Bach and Stephen Sondheim.

Dallahan have truly earned their reputation of a folk band like no other, with their mix of genres - everything from Scottish and Irish traditional music to bluegrass and jazz - blended perfectly in their expert hands. Founders of the band, Jack Badcock (guitar, vocals) and Ciaran Ryan (banjo, mandolin), are joined on this album by Andrew Waite on accordion, and new edition to the line up, Benedict Morris on fiddle. Their fourth studio album Speak of the Devil is released on the 16th of June, and is a rich soundscape of music, incorporating various multicultural influences, to create a fantastic fusion of folk. Jack and Benedict join Anna in the studio to chat about the inspirations behind this new album.
