Professor Sharon Peacock is professor of public health and microbiology at Cambridge University. In March 2020 she set up the COVID-19 Genomics UK (COG-UK) Consortium to map the genetic sequence of the virus as it spread and mutated. Within a year COG-UK was leading the world in identifying mutant COVID strains, and this data was instrumental in helping the development of vaccines and treatments.
Sharon was born in Margate and left school at 16 to work in her local corner shop. She moved on to become a dental nurse the following year and after that she trained to be a nurse at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. After studying for A levels at evening classes, in 1983 she won a place to study medicine as a mature student at the University of Southampton.
After further training and several years researching bacterial diseases in Thailand, she returned to the UK where she led the development of the Cambridge Infectious Diseases Initiative.
In 2021 Sharon was awarded the MRC Millennium Medal, the Medical Research Council’s most prestigious prize.

Artist and printmaker Norman Ackroyd was born in Leeds in 1938. He fell in love with the landscape of the Yorkshire Dales, riding around on his bicycle as a young boy and studied art despite his father believing it was a waste of time. He is now one of Britain's most acclaimed contemporary printmakers, with works in collections around the world including the Tate, Rijksmuseum and MoMA.
Norman has travelled all over the British Isles to visit what he calls "the farthest lands" which inspire his elemental etchings of rock formations in all weathers. His musical inspirations include Schubert, Beethoven, Bob Dylan and a BBC archive recording of Cwm Rhondda.

Long Life

17:30
BBC Radio 3
https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001lzfp
Writings by Jan Morris, the world traveller who died in 2020 aged 94, begin and end this programme which explores the idea of longevity in humans and extraordinary lifespans in the natural world, such as whales, ocean quahogs and the redwood trees depicted in Richard Powers’ prize-winning novel 'The Overstory'. Timothy West and Eileen O’Brien also read extracts from Virginia Woolf, Tove Jansson and George Bernard Shaw’s play 'Back to Methuselah' – whom the Bible claims lived to 969, long beyond the “natural lifespan” of “threescore years and ten”.
Music ranges from Arvo Pärt’s 'Sarah Was Ninety Years Old' based on Abraham’s wife in the Book of Genesis, to an 'Elegy' by Elliott Carter who lived to be 103, and music performed by Danish jazz violinist Svend Asmussen who lived to 100, British harpist Sidonie Goossens who lived until she was 105, and the pianist Menahem Pressler who died at the age of 99 earlier this month.

The Orkney Folk Festival celebrates its 40th Anniversary this year after its humble beginnings in 1983. The Festival reached new heights last year, bringing 7400 audience members to hear folk music from all over the world. This year, newly appointed Festival Producer Craig Corse is at the reins, and has a programme of 24 artists from USA, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Ireland, England, Wales and Scotland, and of course the exceptional home-grown Orcadian talent. These will certainly be anniversary celebrations to remember!
Another soon to be anniversary is that of Piper and the Maker, which was released nearly 20 years ago. Father and son pipe makers, Hamish and Fin Moore, are celebrated craftsmen and have been making instruments collectively for nearly 40 years. Their new album, The Piper and the Maker II ~ Celebrating C, is inspired by the recent surge of interest in smallpipes in the key of C.
