Musician and writer Ben Watt released his first single when he was just 19. In 1981, on his first day as a student at Hull University, he met Tracey Thorn, and together they formed the duo Everything But the Girl – taking their name from the slogan of a local furniture shop. Over the next twenty years, they had 12 top 40 singles and 7 top 20 albums. Since then Ben has experimented in dance and electronic music, run his own record label and returned to songwriting with the release of two solo albums.

Ben has also written two acclaimed books. The first about his experience of a life-threatening autoimmune disease and the second, a poignant portrait of his parents. Most recently, he’s returned to making music with his wife Tracey Thorn in a new Everything But the Girl Album.

Edinburgh Tradfest soon to get underway with 11 days of traditional live music, storytelling, dance, workshops, talks, ceilidhs, and special events taking place at various venues across the city. Douglas Robertson and Jane-Ann Purdy join Anna live to preview some of the highlights of the festival.

Featuring various local performers and presented by two leading Scottish folk musicians Hamish Napier and David Francis, Dufftown Stories Concert & Ceilidh is inspired by the discovery of a beautiful old printed programme from a local talent variety concert in Mortlach Hall run by the local community way back in 1959. Travelling Folk's Helen Needham catches up with Hamish to find out how they're capturing the spirit of this concert 64 years later with local Duffown performers from the present day.

A cast of well-known musicians and writers are touring a concert through the Hebrides to mark the centenary of the three ships - the Metagama, Marloch and Canada - that took nearly 1500 emigrants from Barra, Vatersay, Uists, Benbecula, Harris and Lewis to Canada in 1923 / 1924. 'In The Wake Of the Metagama: An Atlantic Odyssey In Story And Song” will commemorate the stories and experiences of those young emigrants, exploring their lives across the Atlantic and the impact of that mass emigration on the families and communities left behind. Highland pianist and songwriter, Liza Mulholland, has a particularly personal connection to the project since her own grandparents left on the Metagama and she joins Anna live to talk about the upcoming tour.
