Bob Harris introduces highlights of the prestigious 2020 CMA Awards, hosted in Nashville by Reba McEntire and Darius Rucker with live music from the biggest stars of country music.

The Awards - which took place on Wednesday - are the highlight of the annual country music calender and a staple of Radio 2's commitment to the genre for more than 30 years.

Normally held in front of a live audience at Nashville's Bridgestone Arena, this year Covid-19 means that the ceremony has relocated to the Music City Center for a different type of event, but one that still brings all the excitement of the night right into your home.

And this year that means fantastic live performances from Luke Combs. Maren Morris, Keith Urban, Kelsea Ballerini, Eric Church, Ingrid Andress, Morgan Wallen, Miranda Lambert, Old Dominion, Carly Pearce and Lady A's Charles Kelley, alongside tributes to Kenny Rogers, Joe Diffie & Charlie Daniels, a moving presentation to country music legend Charlie Daniels and an incredible duet from Reba & Darius themselves!

Sir Keir Starmer is the leader of the Labour Party, and the leader of the opposition.

Named after Keir Hardie, a founding father of the Labour party, he was elected leader seven months ago in the wake of Labour’s heavy defeat in the 2019 general election.

He stood for, and won, the leadership on a platform of party unity but his resolve has been tested recently by factionalism and infighting. Following the publication of the highly critical Equality and Human Rights Commission report, he has vowed to tackle the issue of anti-Semitism in the party and heal division within the party ranks.

He grew up in Oxted, Surrey, the son of a toolmaker and a nurse. His formative years were clouded by his mother’s debilitating illness: she suffered from Still’s disease, an autoimmune disease, and as a young boy he spent a lot of his time at her hospital bedside.

His political awakening came at 16 when he joined the East Surrey Young Socialists and later he was one of the editors of the radical magazine Socialist Alternatives. After university he had a high-profile career as a human rights lawyer representing prisoners on death row and advising the new Police Service of Northern Ireland which was set up as part of the Good Friday Agreement. In 2008 he changed tack and became the director of Public Prosecutions before switching to politics. In 2015 he was elected to the House of Commons as MP for Holborn and St Pancras.

Mike Brearley, the former England cricket captain, talks to Michael Berkeley about the wide range of classical music that inspires him.

Mike is one of the most successful cricket captains of all time, winning 17 tests for England and losing only four. No one who follows the game will forget the so-called ‘miracle’ of the 1981 Ashes: recalled as captain, Mike galvanised the demoralised team in one of the greatest-ever feats of sporting psychology - and led England to an astonishing 3-1 series victory.

The Australian fast bowler Rodney Hogg famously described Mike as having ‘a degree in people’ – and that’s particularly appropriate as he’s gone on to have a long and successful second career as a psychoanalyst, as well as writing a series of books and working as a cricket journalist.

Mike talks to Michael Berkeley about the close engagement he has with music – he listens with the same intensity and concentration he brought to test cricket and that he brings to his work as a psychoanalyst.

He chooses music by Bach, Monteverdi, and Tchaikovsky, and a Mozart sonata that reminds him of his father, also a first-class cricketer.

Mike is drawn to the complexity and darkness of music written by Beethoven and by Schubert at the very end of their lives and to an opera by Harrison Birtwistle that he finds challenging and difficult but ultimately enlightening.
